Inside the black car—a moving fortress—silence reigned but for the engine's soft purr and the thunder of Veronica's heart.

Casper Wolfe sat opposite her, eyes closed in repose, as though he'd merely concluded a routine business deal.

Veronica pressed herself against the car door, desperate to put space between them.

His aftershave—subtle yet invasive—filled the car's confines, an inescapable reminder of his presence.

She studied him covertly. Passing streetlights illuminated his chiseled profile, the sharp bridge of his nose, those tightly compressed lips.

He was undeniably handsome, but with a dangerous edge—the kind of beauty that drew blood if touched.

Just how deep was her father's debt that this man would pay twenty million to own her? Or was money never the real objective?

Questions stormed through her mind, but her throat locked around each one.

The car finally glided into an underground garage beneath a towering skyscraper, proceeding directly to a private elevator.

The elevator ascended in silence, floor numbers flashing by until they reached the penthouse. When the doors slid open, Veronica's breath caught in her throat.

Before her stretched a vast duplex penthouse—coldly elegant in its luxury.

"Take her to her room," Casper said, breaking his silence.

"Yes, Mr. Wolfe." The butler bowed slightly before turning to Veronica. "Miss Hawthorne, this way, please."

Veronica followed him to a guest suite.

The room matched the penthouse's opulence, lacking nothing—except freedom. The electronic door lock was controlled from outside.

She tested it. Locked tight.

A gilded cage.

About thirty minutes later came a knock. Casper himself entered, carrying a thick folder.

He'd shed his jacket, his shirt sleeves rolled carelessly to the elbows, exposing muscular forearms.

He dropped the folder onto the center table with a heavy thud.

"The contract." His words were clipped, voice crystal clear in the large room. "Read it. Sign it."

Veronica stood her ground, forcing herself to meet his glacial stare.

"What contract? Mr. Wolfe, you may have bought me, but I'm not a slave. Legally—"

"Here," Casper cut her off, "my rules are the only law that matters."

He moved closer, his presence alone a crushing weight of intimidation.

"Your father's company isn't just broke—it's neck-deep in trouble you're better off not knowing about. My twenty million bought all those problems. And you."

Veronica's heart plummeted.

She'd suspected things were bad, but not this catastrophic.

"Sign it," he pointed to the document. "For the next year, you'll be my fiancée in name. You'll attend events, behave appropriately, and maintain the appearance of intimacy with me. After a year, I'll wipe out the Hawthorne Group's remaining debts, and you'll walk away free with enough money to live comfortably forever."

"In name?" Veronica echoed, a hint of mockery in her tone.

Casper's steel-blue eyes narrowed, as though examining an underling who'd asked something particularly stupid.

"Sex isn't a mandatory clause in this contract. But let me be clear, Veronica," he used her name for the first time, his tone so cold it made her teeth ache, "don't test my patience or try anything clever. How well your parents fare depends entirely on your cooperation."

He'd mentioned her parents. The most direct—and effective—threat possible.

Veronica approached the table and lifted the contract.

The terms were brutally clear, detailing her expected conduct, required public appearances, and even listing people she couldn't contact without approval.

Her hand trembled slightly.

One year. Playing fiancée to this ice-cold man, living under his constant surveillance and control.

"Why me?" She looked up, eyes flashing with confusion and defiance. "With your money and power, you could find dozens of women willing to play this game."

Casper paused, his gaze lingering on her face a beat longer than usual. "You fit the requirements."

Seeing her hesitation, Casper's patience evaporated.

"Sign it," his voice was deadly calm, "or I make one call, and certain people who've been circling the Hawthorne Group will know your father's last shield is gone. How long do you think they'll survive?"

Veronica closed her eyes briefly.

She had no choice.

From the moment her father signed that loan shark contract, from the moment she'd offered herself as sacrifice for her family's survival, she'd stepped onto this one-way path.

She snatched up the pen and, at the signature line, stabbed her name onto the paper—Veronica Hawthorne.

Before the ink dried, she felt a piece of her soul sealed into the humiliating document.

Casper lifted the signed contract, examined it with an expressionless face.

"Good. Someone will measure you tomorrow for appropriate clothing and accessories. Remember your place. Remember my warning."

The door closed once more, the electronic lock engaging with a soft click.

Veronica collapsed onto the cold leather sofa. Beyond the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, the city pulsed with life, while she remained trapped in her sky-high prison.

The contract was signed. The game had begun.

She knew that to survive this devil's bargain—maybe even find some hope—she'd have to master his game on his turf.
