BEATRIX watched as Penelope began to tear head after head. Her rage was unstoppable. Behind her stood a huge blue wolf surrounded by a black smoke. No one who stood close to the smoke can stand more than five seconds.
It was like poison.
She tapped her hand and send more men after the two nuisance. She understood that her lackeys were still numb after the hypnosis that she did to them but their incompetence shows and it irritates her so much.
'There were a lot of them. Why none of them can wipe that woman's face off?' She scoffed.
Penelope got the best out of life by doing nothing.
'Look, she even got herself the rarest of all the wolves. A blue wolf as her mate!' Beatrix gritted her teeth. She didn't provoke the two during their stay in the pack because she was still finding the perfect way to break the bond between the two of them.
Beatrix had to have that blue wolf to herself.
It's unfortunate that they were fate mated. Breaking their bond is impossible.
'This woman always have to get the good things in life, hmn? Then why don't I just kill her. Maybe she can stop getting the good luck all to herself.'
Ever since Penelope came to the pack, Beatrix became the second best in everything.
The things she lacked became more distinct and the people often talks about it.
'She's a Beta, so why does her accomplishments matter more than I, an Alpha can do?'
Whenever Beatrix made an agreement from the shifter's committee or the with the pack within their surrounding, it was deemed as 'the way it should as she is the Alpha'. It was her duty.
But when Penelope saved an Omega's daughter from drowning, everyone celebrated how selfless was it for Penelope to do that.
Why are they different? 'We're both wolves. I ranked higher than her— I was born superior than her.' Why are they treated differently?
Even the men who sleeps with her can't get Penelope out of their wishful thinking.
'What do you have in you that I didn't have?'
Beatrix grew up being told how an Alpha was supposed to get anything that they want. Money, pleasure, land and power.
It doesn't make sense for her how a mere Beta can take all of her possession.
Blood oozed from Penelope's shoulder. A man finally took a tear out of her.
Beatrix felt an unusual excitement. The happiness of getting what she wants and finally redeeming herself.
"Hurt her more. Kill her!" she chanted. "I do not wish to dirty my hands with her blood."
The blue wolf's eyes focused on Beatrix. She didn't notice because of the sight of Penelope screeching of pain brings her so much joy.
"Aaaah!"
Beatrix cackled madly. The great Penelope has fallen down. No one can surpass her. No one has the right to.
Cold hands wrapped around Beatrix neck tightly. Her eyes bulged with shock and incredulity. She watched as Penelope's eyes turned shiny. It was like she had found hope once again.
"Death," a broken voice whispered in her ears. It was young but raspy. Beatrix looked to the right and stared face to face with the kid that she had ordered to be poisoned yesterday.
Blackness met her subconscious the moment she blinked again.
"IRLAN!" Penelope screamed as Beatrix' head rolled to the ground. Irlan's innocent face was now smeared with spots of blood. His eyes stared unblinking to her. "Irlan, move away now! Heal yourself!"
Irlan shook his head as though he couldn't understand. Joaquin roared when he sensed Penelope's blood.
He was still under countless wolves, fighting his way through to get to Penelope
She coughed blood. The men who's trying to kill them stopped squirming after a few moment. Their clouded eyes cleared up and the pain in their body was now finally recognized by their mind.
Joaquin took a large bite out of every enemy. Penelope wants to laugh but she knew that's inappropriate.
In the end, she sobbed. Her whole body ached.
It feels like everything was her fault.
"I'm sorry, Joaquin."
A man, heavily deluded with Beatrix' hypnosis lunged to slice Penelope's face. A body thew himself in front of her and accepted the attack in her stead.
Penelope stared as Irlan's body sagged in front of her.
Joaquin roared madly. He jumped to the attacker's direction and tear his limbs. Penelope didn't mind the sight and felt Irlan's heart.
'He's not breathing anymore.'
A large slash to his back finished Irlan's young life.
Penelope couldn't open her mouth.
She couldn't make a sound.
The men scurried away when they saw Joaquin getting feral. Penelope stopped watching him and ducked to cry silently.
Irlan did everything that she should've done.
Joaquin didn't change back to his human form and encircled Penelope as if guarding her.
She mourned for Lance in her heart. She cried for Irlan.
The air rushes to Penelope's body. The cold made everything more painful for her.
This was not part of her plan. She never expected any of this to happen because of her. Two lives lost because of her own problems. She felt ashamed.
After a few minutes, Nisel and Henrietta stood in front of her.
"Is this Irlan Nieves from the Roan Clan?" Nisel asked. Henrietta bent her knees and stared at Irlan's face. Penelope was engulfed by the need to secure Irlan's body.
"He's too young to die."
"What are you up to now?" Penelope's throat burned. "He's already like this! Are you going to push him thoroughly?"
Joaquin stood in front of Penelope. The rumble in his chest made Nisel take a step back.
"He's my son's bond mate. You don't know how different it goes for vampires." Nisel claimed, "He's in this state. Do you think my son is not the same right now?"
Penelope closed her eyes. 'Does that mean Horan will die as well?'
"Stop scaring people with your face, Nisel." A woman's voice boomed from above. "The woman has gone through a lot. Pay some respect!"
"I'm Mathilda Roan." A woman in red descended with a bright maple colored fan. "I'm Irlan's guardian. I'm here to take his body back."
Penelope bowed her head to the ground. She cried to her. "I'm sorry. Irlan sacrificed himself to save me. I... should have been the one to protect him but—"
"I sent Irlan to help you and Joaquin survive. If he was to remain alive while the both of you were harmed, what's the point of sending him to you?" Mathilda closed her fan and touched Irlan's face. "He's a brave one, right? You don't have to worry for him."
"Then what about my son? They were bonded!"
"Don't sweat your self so much, Old Nisel. Your stupid son will survive. I guess you all didn't know about this but, Irlan can't die."
With a swish of her hand, Irlan's body disappeared. She eyed Nisel and Henrietta for a while before she mumbled, "I am asking both of you to please undo the curse that your son put to my Irlan. Keep it in mind where your kinds truly belongs and stop meddling with magic."
Before Nisel can argue with her, she popped into smoke.
Now with nowhere to let the anger in his chest, Nisel spat on the ground. Henrietta in turn rolled her eyes. "She's still that cheap."
Within a few more seconds, the couple faded into the darkness without saying goodbye.
"Pen..." Joaquin enveloped Penelope into his arms. "Stop crying. That Mathilda said he can't die."
"I don't know, Joaquin... I don't know."
Joaquin wondered why Adarmus didn't show his face until now. The danger had passed but his father never showed his face to help.
It was like blatantly telling him that he doesn't care wether Joaquin survives or not.
Oddly enough, Joaquin feels nothing.
He knew that Adarmus was selfish.
This time, Joaquin doesn't care anymore.
Staring at how this day made Penelope broken, he vowed to solely focus on her.
After everything that had happen, he realized that what they needed the most isn't the approval of the people around them but the support they have with each other.
Everyone can leave Joaquin behind but Penelope will always stay. He knew that now. He had no insecurities left.
Penelope was perfect the way she is. All he had to do now is to grow himself to the man she deserves.
