Ember's Pov
Remember I said that Lara was impossible? Well, you can simply add insufferable to the mix, because even after kicking them out, both of them still had a whole lot to say, and didn't have a lot of trouble with letting me hear them.
I might have gone out to shut them up, but I was somewhat interested in their rubbish
" I don't believe that little tramp. Who does she think she is?”
“I can’t believe she just did that either. She was incredibly rude to be honest.” Kate said softly,
“It’s Paris’s fault. Even now, he’s siding with her. He actually told me that the house belongs to her. Even in the face of us being humiliated, he still said that.”
“You can’t blame him.” Kate said softly, “you know Alpha Paris can be a gentleman at times.”
“Gentleman? Oh, I've never been so humiliated in my life." Lara wailed and I rolled my eyes.
If she hadn't come in here and caused all of the troubles that she had, I would never have resulted in the measures that I had and perhaps she would have been able to salvage her dignity.
“I’m sure he didn’t expect her behaviour. I didn’t expect it either. She’s always so soft spoken.”
“Soft spoken? I’ve always known that girl has the devil in her. Now that Paris wants nothing to do with her, she has no qualms about exposing herself. She’s nothing like you. If she was only a fraction of the person that you are.”
"I'm sorry she's made you feel this way. Pay her no mind."
"oh, my sweet Kate girl, I will make sure she regrets this. Oh, her absolute nerve." she said and I heard her tsk, "Only God knows what Paris ever saw in her. I'm just glad that he found someone like you, someone pleasant and nice. A charm to be around."
"She might be a bit annoying, but she’s beautiful. I can imagine that Paris was caught by that. Also, Like I said, when it comes to matters of the heart, you really can't fight it. I'm sure Paris was so in love." Kate said and she even sounded wistful. it was hard to believe it was Kate who spoke this way, but then again, it was Kate and she was full of pretenses.
"he never should have encountered such a low breed. Beautiful or not, She's terrible. She's nothing like you. That girl has gotten nothing on you.”
And God knew I was glad and grateful to be nothing like her.
"I'm sure she can't be so bad when one gets to know her. I suppose that could be another one of the explanations as to why Paris stayed with her all this while. Perhaps he saw some good in her."
"Some good, my foot. There isn’t one good thing about that girl. Trust me Kate, that girl is nothing but a nightmare. Before you came, she paraded that house as though she owned it, even if we all knew that the girl was never Paris’s mate. I bet God brought you to humble her. The damned tramp.”Lara swore and I shook my head. So Queen Luna Lara didn’t just have a terrible tongue, but she was also a bloody liar.
They were quiet for a while after that. So much so that I had deluded myself that they had gone. But it was pure delusion on my part , because moments later there was a loud bang on my door and I had to bite my tongue to keep from swearing to heaven and hell.
"You have got to be kidding me." I sighed and looked at the door when the bang came again. If it was Lara and Kate, and I knew it was them, I was going to be threatened to forget that I never threw the first punch.
"what? What is it?!" I yelled when I opened the door and came face to face with a surly security guard with a bald head. I didn't know this bloke,
"Can I help you?" I asked, matching his surly mood. If he thought he could intimidate me, he was going to be surprised
"The Queen Luna just informed me that you're in this house illegally, I'm going to have to ask you to leave." I raised a brow and looked at Lara and Kate who stood behind him, both of them looking smug and I cast my gaze heavenward and prayed for patience.
"I see." I muttered and turned back to the guard, "Do you work here?"
"I come and I go. But I mainly work at the other house." I nodded slowly in understanding,
"So you're misinformed." I said and stepped forward, "Paris and I own this house." I said clearly, so everyone could hear me, "Paris and I may no longer be together, but are yet to be legally divorced. However, even after we are divorced, this house will still be mine because I'm entitled to half of his possessions." I said boldly and leveled a gaze a Lara,
"I never wanted to make a big deal out of this divorce and what I could get from it because no matter what has happened between Paris and me, it is not my desire to wring him dry. Contrary to what you might choose to delude yourself about my personality, that’s simply not who I am.”
And even now, with everything that happened, I still cared. Sure, Paris had missed the divorce arranged today, but if I really wanted his property so badly, I would have taken the arrangement to his very own house. I am well aware that there are women who were capable of such thievery and manipulation. But I cared too much and my heart would never allow him to take advantage this way.
“You’re just saying that to save face. Paris is there though, so you can drop the act.” Lara said and I shook my head.
“That’s the thing though. This isn’t an act. I haven’t put up any act these past years. Well, except the part where I pretended that I was okay with your maltreatment.”
“I never mistreated you.” Lara spat and I shrugged,
“I suppose your memories are a mess then.” I said and shrugged again, “in any case,” I said drawing to my full height, “ let this be the first and the last time you all bother me with this. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going back to rest. You all need to get off my property before I call the police." I said, and turned away from them, banging the door hard enough for emphasis. I was never one to make tantrums, but it didn't mean I was incapable of making them.
"Can she really do that?" Kate quietly when I had walked in, and I rolled my eyes.
"do what?" Lara asked her,
"take half of Paris's wealth."
Lara didn't respond immediately. As though she was considering the question,
"Does that bother you?" Lara asked softly,
"I won't deny that it does. It's not fair that Paris should lose his belongings this way."
"Well, divorces usually bring about such things. But no, I don’t t think she can actually do that. She doesn’t have the spine. She's just bluffing."
"And you, Luna Lara, just called my bluff," I said and shook my head
"Do you think so?" Kate asked, still sounding a bit unsure,
"I do. Don't worry so much about that one Kate. She thinks she's all that, especially since she won that Alpha banquet, but just wait and see how she'll fall. You know what they say, don't you?"
"no," Kate said in a small voice,
"Well then, let me enlighten you. Ember thinks she's all that, thinks she's climbed up some kind of social ladder, but then, the higher you rise, the harder your fall will be. That's it. That's what they say."
I shook my head at Lara's spite. The woman was completely mad with hate, and I refused to soak all of that negativity in,
"But will you do it?" My wolf asked when as I walked to the kitchen to get some water,
"do what?" I asked, stopping short, because she sounded somewhat sad,
"leave Paris?"
I sighed and shrugged, "what can I do? He isn't our mate, and he has a mate who seems to be willing to kill for him."
" I know," she said, but I was suddenly sad too. Add the situation that just occurred with Lara and Kate and the reminiscing I had done earlier, then I was an emotional mess.
"in any case, I don't think Paris will ever put me first," I said, remembering the night of the party that had pushed me to want to get a divorce by all means.
My wolf didn't respond, but she didn't have to. We were so in sync, so I knew that she wasn't okay either.
I sighed and tried to take a step forward, but the room only spun. Even when I reached for a table to support myself, I only ended up successfully knocking something down.
And then, the room went black.
