EMBER'S POV
I was glad when she didn't follow me, and bumped into one of my co-workers who looked at me with a weak smile,
“That one is a bit loony, isn’t she?” I didn’t bother pretending I didn’t know who she spoke of and simply shrugged,
“I’m used to her kind. What I don’t understand is what someone like that would be doing here?”
“I suppose she’s our new co-worker. But if you ask me, I truly doubt that she’ll be here for long.”
“Not with that attitude.” I said. And especially not if I had anything to do about it. Because the very thought of working in the same company was a very hard one.
“You aren’t even the only person she’s treated that way. And it’s just her first morning. Acting like that, you’d think she’s the new president or something.”
“I can imagine.” I said dryly.
“But I suppose even her attitude with you just now was beyond expectation.”
“What would you do if I told you that she was actually holding back?”
The woman looked at me with surprise and I nodded,
“Have a good day, and please avoid her.” I said and went about my work.
I did my best to avoid her too, but I suppose I had it in the back of my mind that women like her were simply unrelenting, so that when her mother finally showed up later that day, I really wasn't surprised.
But I was forced to wonder, why? Why did these two women enjoy pestering and stressing me out?
I mean, did they not have lives that they led that filled them up?
"Well, it looks like you were right, Christina. The devil really does wear Gucci." Luna Lara said when they found me getting coffee in the break room,
Was I pissed? Yes. Yes, I was. Tell me, who wouldn't be, when their break has been blatantly and offensively disturbed in this manner?
"ignore. Just ignore." I chanted, as I filled my cup and grabbed a donut, then made to leave. Obviously, I was going to be spending my break inside of my office. Add that to my list of things to be pissed off about by the way.
"She really does think she's all that." Luna Lara said, and gritted my teeth, to keep from simply just hitting them with hot coffee. Now, let me tell you, however irritating and annoying Christina could be, she was nothing compared to her mother. You could say, Christina learned all that she knew from her mother.
"I blame Paris. He's the one who still gives her attention after all this." Christina said savagely and I rolled my eyes. Obviously, they couldn’t take the hint that I really did not give a damn about their beloved Paris.
"but I hear there's a new bloke she's managed to get her claws on. What's his name? Edward, Damien"
"William." Christina drawled, and that did it for me.
I sipped from my coffee and bit into my donut, before placing them on a nearby table. Then I gave them what I knew they were simply begging for. A confrontation,
"Hello Christina, I see you had to go get mummy dearest to fight your battles for you."
Christina sneered and her mother said, "You have a mouth on you, for one who should be hiding her face in shame."
"Now why would I do that?" I asked and suddenly craved my coffee. It was my break time after all.
"Because you're a low life pretending to be something that you aren't. So tell us, be honest. How did you end up working here?"
"Depends. Are you sure you want to know?" I asked and reached for my coffee, drank from it, and irritation colored Luna Lara's face,
"You can't even try to hide it. You're despicable."
“And what is exactly, that I’m supposed to be hiding?”
"So tell us, which one of the managers did you have to sleep with to get to where you are now?"
"whore." Christina spat and I turned to look at her, "I'll bet anything you seduced the president himself."
"I think he's way out of my league. But thanks for placing me way up there." I said and turned away.
“Of course he’s way out of your league. but that didn’t stop you. Just look at you, your past history proves it all. Paris was way out of your league, but you still managed to warm his bed.”
“Don’t play dumb.” Christina said with spite, “being a social climber is all you are good at. My family is way too good for you, it’s why you craved being a part of it.”
“But here I am, so happy and glad to be away from it.” I said with a bright smile and she sneered.
“I’m pretty sure the other employees here share my sentiment.”
“And what sentiment could that be, Christina? What sentiment could other employees share with you, who just started working here today?”
“That you’re a waste of space. You’re a pain to come into work and have to deal with everyday and the air would be much easier to inhale if you weren’t here.”
“And the employees whom you’ve barely had a good word with , told you all that? Just today?”
“I’m no snitch.” She said with a wicked smile and I just shook my head,
“No. You’re worse. Way worse.” I said and began to turn away.
“Mum, just look at her, playing the role of the diplomatic employee.
"Perhaps her diplomatic ways are why she's a valid employee." we all turned to the sound of the voice, and I was shocked to see the president.
He was the very last person I would have wanted to witness this situation.
"Your inability to take responsibility shows that there really is something wrong with you. And me, seeing as I'm the one who is employed. A disciplinary assembly won’t be needed, both of you are required to leave this company. Do so in the next ten minutes, otherwise, I'll get the security to escort you and assure you, it won’t end well." he said and turned to me.
"a word?" I nodded and followed him, but as we walked by, I saw some of my co-workers, pumping their fists in the air with excitement and couldn’t help but smile,
“Thanks guys.” I mouthed soundlessly to them.
I paused when he paused, and turned to face him when he faced me,
“I must commend your bravery and ability to speak up for yourself. “
“Thank you sir.”
"I must apologize for the day you've had. I only just realized what was happening and came to the scene as soon as I did."
"You don't have to apologize, their behavior isn't your fault."
"In the future, I assure you that I'll do my best to do more checks while recruiting to avoid employing people who disturb the peace of this place."
"That would work fine," I said simply, hoping to not make him feel bad. We were both silent after that, and to keep it from getting weird, I shrugged,
"I suppose I should get back to work."
"Take thirty minutes to cool off," he said kindly and I nodded.
"Thank you, sir."
I got word from Paris's grandfather, that he wasn't feeling too well, and made it a point to visit him after work. I may not have a good relationship with the mother and sister, but Paris's granddad and I were pretty tight, and it didn't feel right in any way to abandon our friendship just because of the rest of his kin.
So after work hours, when William came to get me, I told him about my plan,
"I won't be there long. I just need to see him,"
"Alright." William said and nodded slowly, "I'll come with, then,"
"Are you sure?" I asked, hopeful, and he nodded,
"In any case, I want to hear about the day you've had."
"oh, it's a mouthful. I'll tell you on the way."
And I did
"The galls of those two," he said angrily, as we came down from the bus we'd taken. He had opted for a walk and we left his car at my office,
"I know, right? Thank God my president showed up, if not-" I said, and stopped short,
"if not? Em?" William asked, but I had lost track of what I was saying, because walking toward us, not too far away, were Paris and Kate.
