She cried miserably. Her words left my brother speechless.
His mind was hazy back then, and he lost consciousness after being rescued, so naturally, his memories were unclear.
Hearing Ann say that and seeing her utterly wronged expression,
Alex’s heart softened once again.
"Alright, stop crying. It was my memory playing tricks on me. I wronged you!"
Ann sobbed and threw herself into his arms, crying loudly.
But she didn’t see the shadow of suspicion darkening his eyes.
Over the next two days,
My mother and father mobilized everyone to search the waters around the yacht for me, but found nothing.
After coaxing Ann to sleep, Alex took out my phone from his pocket and handed it to his subordinate.
"Find a way to recover the data on this phone no matter what. I need to get to the truth."
After his subordinate left on his orders, he took out his phone and dialed a number.
"Help me find out where the guys I hired back then are hiding lately. Tell them to lay low for now, or else I’ll have them thrown in jail anytime!"
After saying this, he hung up.
Looking out at the calm, blue sea, Alex prayed silently.
"Isabelle, the fact that your body hasn’t been recovered yet... does it mean you’re really okay?"
"But where could you have gone? Who will take care of you, battered and bruised like this, now that you’ve left us? Please come back..."
Suddenly, my father, who had been searching with binoculars on the deck, received a call and clutched his chest, collapsing.
"Dear!"
My mother screamed, holding him up. Alex rushed over, laid him down, veins bulging on his forehead, yelling for a doctor.
Fortunately, the doctor who had been attending to my bandages was still on the yacht. He quickly came with his medical kit to examine my father.
After placing a salvia tablet under my father’s tongue and checking his eyes, the doctor’s expression turned serious.
"Mr. Lawrence seems to have had a heart attack due to shock. Some oxygen, medication, and rest should help him recover."
"But he must avoid any such shocks in the future. There’s a risk of cardiac arrest."
My mother held my father’s hand, tears streaming down her face.
"What could have shocked him? Was it that phone call he just received?!"
Alex quickly took Dad’s phone and dialed back the last number.
The person on the other end soon explained the situation.
It turned out that, based on the clues my father provided, they had tracked down the dozen or so masked men who had been on the yacht two days ago.
While escaping by jumping into the sea, one of them had run into a shark and was nearly killed.
He screamed for help and was rescued by a passing fishing boat, but not before losing a leg to the shark.
After being unconscious for a day and a night, he woke up and was tracked down by my father’s people.
Tempted by money, he cracked almost without resistance.
He and his buddies had been hired by a young lady to put on a show on the yacht.
The pay was great, and the only risk was jumping into the sea—something these seasoned coastal locals found easy.
So they agreed without hesitation.
The person who hired them was none other than Ann Lawrence.
When Alex heard this, his eyes widened in fury.
He hung up, stormed to Ann’s room, kicked the door open, and dragged her out of bed.
"Those masked men from two nights ago—did you hire them?!"
Ann was terrified by his demeanor but forced herself to stay calm, beginning to lie.
"Brother, how could you ask that? I was almost assaulted by those men!"
"They almost crippled my hands on Isabelle’s orders! You and Mom and Dad saw it yourselves!"
Alex wasn’t going to be fooled again. His deep eyes seemed to darken like ink.
"I don’t want to hear any more nonsense. If you say it wasn’t you, hand over your phone and prove it to me!"
Ann’s face turned pale. She stubbornly said, "No! You’re obviously suspecting me because of Isabelle! I saved your life! How dare you doubt me for her?!"
Hearing Ann’s screams, Alex still released her.
To this day, he believed Ann had saved him all those years ago, which was why he couldn’t bear to see her hurt.
"I’ll believe you one more time."
Alex snorted coldly, ordered someone to keep a close watch on Ann, and went alone to see the rescued big man.
