The dream of attending United Germland University had been on my mind for ages.
If I had not married Henry, I would already be walking its hallowed halls.
However, marriage did not put a stop to my education.
Thankfully, my determination paid off. After love let me down, I could still make my way back to the university I had always adored.
Pregnancy meant more paperwork.
However, Liam was there, helping me through it all.
When Wren found out, she dropped a bombshell on me.
"Selena, you know, my brother's always had a thing for you. If you hadn't rushed into marriage with Henry three years back, he might've spilled his heart to you."
I was shocked, struggling to take in her words.
"Don't worry about it, though. Even if he didn't have feelings for you, he'd never leave you hanging. You're my best friend, after all."
That gave me some comfort.
"You've got it wrong, Wren. We're just as we were a decade ago. He's like a brother to me!"
Wren let out a long sigh. "Selena, I wish you were my sister-in-law. My brother's still on his own, you know."
I stroked my belly, smiling softly. "Let's not be silly. I'm pregnant now. Remarrying isn't in the cards for me!"
That baby was the only family I had, and I cherished it with everything I had.
Wren's frustration flared up. "So, you're not remarrying because you're hung up on that good-for-nothing Henry? You've got to let him go! He's about to make it official with another woman!"
A twinge of pain hit my heart, but I kept my voice steady. "Melanie, right? They've tied the knot as far as I'm aware."
"You wouldn't believe how full of herself Melanie is! She's always posting those lovey-dovey pics on social media, and Henry's never even acknowledged they're a thing, but she's acting like she's already his wife!
"Dis they actually tie the knot? Melanie never flashed a marriage certificate. Knowing her, if they were married, she'd be showing it off to the world."
Wren could not stand Melanie, everything about her just rubbed her the wrong way.
I shook my head, cutting in softly. "Let's not worry about them. They're out of our lives now, and what they do doesn't matter to us anymore."
I figured Henry was history, but a month later, there he was, right in the middle of campus.
Henry was in my path to the cafeteria, staring hard at my belly.
"You're pregnant? Is it his?"
I felt a pang in my heart but stood my ground. "Henry, we're done. You're with Melanie now, and my life has nothing to do with you."
He acted like he did not hear a word I said, stepping closer with more questions,
"Is he good to you? Why isn't he here looking after you? Being pregnant's hard, and you're still in school. Can you handle it?"
His concern was a whirlwind that messed with my head, I forced myself to stay stern.
"Henry, what right do you have to ask? My life is none of your business."
He dropped his gaze, looking like a lost puppy. "I just... I worry about you, and now, with the baby, I'm even more worried. What am I supposed to do?"
He looked up, his voice tentative. "Maybe I could help out? No strings attached. I'll just do what I can since your husband's too busy to be there for you."
My heart felt choked up, and I could not help but raise my voice at him.
"Henry, what are you trying to pull?! We're divorced! Can't you just leave me alone? I never want to see you again!"
