The moment the Sire vanished, the ritual circle went completely out of control.
The immense energy bucked like a wild horse, tearing through the ruins. Lilith was hit by the backlash, and a thousand years of blood-power were instantly drained from her. Her body aged in an instant. The seductive vampire queen shriveled into a being as weak as a newborn.
"No... impossible..." she knelt on the ground, her voice a faint buzz. "My power... my eternal life..."

The energy vortex at the center of the circle grew larger, devouring everything around it. Lightning split the sky. It was the end of the world.
Just then, the words of the ancient covenant echoed in the air once more:
"Vampire Elena, in recognition of your great merits from a past life, for saving the masses and accumulating sufficient faith..."
"You are the true heir to this ritual."
"Step into the heart of the circle, complete the final purification, and be reborn."
A beam of light, even more brilliant than before, descended from the sky and enveloped me.

The warm, pure power made me tremble.
This was the chance I had dreamed of.
To become a Daywalker. To escape the vampire curse. To live freely in the sun.
"Elena!" Cassian ran to me, his gray-blue eyes filled with urgency. "Go! Now! This is what you've always wanted!"

"But..." I looked at the crazed, spinning energy core at the center of the circle. "The ritual requires the sacrifice of a holy man..."
"I know." Cassian walked toward the center without hesitation. "It is what I must do. Even if you don't choose me this time…"
"Don't!" I grabbed his arm. "Cassian, you can't!"
He froze, looking at me, confused.
"Elena, this is your chance. If you miss it, you'll never become a Daywalker."
"I don't want you to die!" I screamed hysterically. "I would rather be a vampire forever than have you sacrifice yourself for me!"
Shock flashed in Cassian's eyes. "Why? Isn't this your greatest wish?"
"Because a world without you is still dark, even filled with sunlight! We were both reborn. That means I must change everything!"
My words left Cassian stunned.
Just then, Adrian rushed over. He pressed his sword to Cassian's throat.
"Stop it, priest!" he yelled, his voice trembling. Tears welled in his amber eyes. "I won't let you die!"
Cassian looked at him coldly. "Wolf, this has nothing to do with you."
"It does!" Adrian turned to me, his voice breaking. "Elena, I'm begging you, don't let him die... and don't leave us..."
He fell to his knees before me, his hands outstretched and trembling.
"I know I'm not worthy of you. I know your heart belongs to him. But Elena... none of us can bear to lose you."
Looking at Adrian kneeling before me, and then at Cassian ready to die for me, my heart felt like it was being torn in two.
Was the tragedy of my past life going to repeat itself?
No.
This time, I would change everything.
I slowly walked toward the heart of the out-of-control ritual.
"Elena, what are you doing?" Cassian cried out.
I spread my arms, facing the spinning vortex of energy.
"I don't want anyone to sacrifice themselves for me," my voice cut through the storm. "If this is my fate, then I will defy fate!"
My mind shot out like invisible tentacles. Plunging deep into the energy core. I was going to hijack the ritual itself.
"Elena, you're insane!" Adrian screamed in terror. "That energy will tear you apart!"
"No, it won't," I sneered. "I'm going to devour it all!"
The Sire's dark essence, the people's power of faith, the thousand years of energy accumulated in this circle...
I would make it all mine.
A torrent of power flooded my body. The pain was so intense I almost passed out, but I gritted my teeth and held on.
My skin began to glow, the vampiric pallor giving way to a healthy, human tone. My fangs remained sharp, but they no longer feared the sun. My power was greater than ever, yet I was no longer bound by the vampire curse.
In a blinding flash of light, the entire ritual circle collapsed.
I stood in the center of the ruins, feeling the immense power thrumming inside me.
The sun fell on my skin. It was warm and comforting, not burning.
I had done it.
I was a Daywalker.
"Elena..." Cassian stared at me, his eyes filled with shock and... relief?
"Elena!" Adrian started to rush forward to embrace me.
But just then, a majestic voice thundered from the heavens.
"Daywalker Elena, you have completed the purification and escaped the curse of your blood."
"Now, Heaven bestows upon you a sacred mission. Protect this continent. Purify all darkness."
"From this day on, you will walk the line between light and dark, a bridge between two worlds."
I felt an immense holy power flow into me.
It was a summons from Heaven.
I understood.
This was the price of becoming a Daywalker.
I no longer belonged to myself. I belonged to this land that needed protecting.
I looked at Cassian and Adrian, my heart aching with reluctance.
But I knew that my very existence would bring them great danger.
The Church would never tolerate Cassian's connection to a heretic.
The kingdom's nobles would never accept Adrian's relationship with a vampire.
If I stayed, I would only destroy their futures, and maybe even their lives.
"Elena, where are you going?" Cassian sensed the farewell in my eyes.
"I must fulfill Heaven's mission," I said, forcing back the pain in my heart. "To protect this land from the encroaching darkness."
"What about us?" Adrian asked urgently. "You're just going to leave us?"
I took one last, long look at them.
"You both have your own paths. Cassian, you must spread the word of your god. Adrian, you must become a king."
"And I..." I spread my newly formed wings of light. "I will be where you cannot see me, watching over this world... and watching over you."
"No!" They both rushed toward me.
But I had already become a streak of light, disappearing over the horizon.
In the last moment before I vanished, I said silently to myself:
Goodbye. This time... it is my turn to protect you.
