As everyone crowded around, I cracked a smile and started flipping through the ledger myself.
We had barely gotten through this month's entries when everyone froze.
"How is it that this month's paycheck just came in and it's already gone?"
Zara zeroed in on a line item, demanding answers. "The money just hit the account, and it's already used up. Who else could've been using Josh's money but you?"
I whipped out my phone and pulled up PayPal.
"Mom, you've got it all wrong. This is obviously a PayPal transaction. I only link my own card to PayPal. I have never linked to Josh's. So how could it have been me?"
I had Zara stumped with that one.
The crowd was scratching their heads, too.
Finally, Jasmine broke the silence. "Chloe, don't tell me you whipped up a fake ledger just to throw us off?"
Zara's eyes widened as she got it, and she blurted out loud and clear. "Print it out again. This has got to be some cooked-up ledger you made!"
The crowd around us buzzed with speculation.
"Exactly, nobody saw how she did it. She's definitely faking it!"
"Good thing her sister-in-law is on her toes. Otherwise, she would've pulled the wool over our eyes!"
I threw up my hands, going with the flow of public sentiment, and handed them the card.
"Go ahead, take a look."
Zara, skeptical, accepted the card and headed into the bank with Jasmine.
Josh tried to intervene, but the crowd, eager for a show, kept him firmly on the sidelines.
I could not help but smile when Zara emerged from the bank, triumphantly waving a fresh bank statement.
Zara's face fell, and she brandished the ledger.
"Let's see if you're still smiling once everyone sees where the money's gone!
"I want to see exactly where every month's paycheck has gone."
I nodded, unruffled.
"By all means, check. I stand by everything I've said."
Zara thought I was just bluffing and huffed, flipping through the ledger with Jasmine.
"You've been in charge of my son's bank account; there's no way there's this much spending!"
However, as she looked at the ledger, her face froze in shock. "No way! How is this statement the same as before?"
I glanced at my husband with a knowing look.
"You printed this statement yourself, so there was no way I could've faked it, right?
"It looks like Josh has some secrets of his own."
Caught off guard, Josh's eyes darted around, and he broke into a nervous sweat.
"Honey, let's go home and sort out any misunderstandings.
"Putting you in the spotlight could mess up your future, too."
I let out an icy laugh. "I think you're more worried about it messing up your dear sister's life. And yours, too!"
To honor Josh's trust, I had never once dipped into his bank account.
All the household bills, even the cash I handed to him for his own needs, came out of my pocket!
I had set aside my paycheck for rainy days, but when my mom got sick last month and needed hospital care, I came up short for the bill and had to use Josh's card. That was when I found out that it was completely drained!
I got a friend at the bank to dig into it and discovered that the cash would vanish within weeks of his salary drop.
I wanted to give Josh the benefit of the doubt, for old times' sake, and a chance to make things right.
I thought if we cleared the air, he could return the money, and we would move past it. However, they turned on me, leaving me out in the cold, and that just broke my heart.
Jasmine, already a delicate thing, looked like she might crumble.
"Chloe, what are you saying? I get that you're not my fan, but why drag my brother and me through the mud?"
The crowd watching us shook their heads in disgust.
"Too scared to spill the beans, so you throw dirt on them instead? You must see the world through a dirty lens."
I brushed off their judgment, my eyes catching the designer label on Jasmine's dress.
"You're just Josh's sister in name, not by blood.
"What's the deal? You two really get a kick out of this brother-sister act?"
Suddenly, people started seeing Jasmine and Josh in a new light.
Zara jumped in to cut through the noise.
"Can we stick to the matter at hand? Aren't we supposed to be going over these charges?
"So, what's with this regular 750-dollar charge every month?"
Josh was there, silent as a statue. I had to lay out the hard truths.
"It's for the car loan. It's right there in black and white."
Zara's face scrunched up as she shot back, saying, "Didn't you insist on buying that car yourself? Why is Josh footing the bill for it?"
