On the second day, Lucas was out of the ICU. The police brought updates. They had officially opened an investigation into John, Amy, Ava, Ms. Thompson, and the others.
When officers searched the confinement center, they found payment records in Ms. Thompson’s office. She had bribed the nurse to feed Lucas poisoned milk powder. They also found video-editing software that had been used to edit the surveillance footage, along with chat logs between her and Susan.
Inside the chat logs, it showed clearly how they had planned to swap the babies, and kill Lucas.
John was arrested for child abandonment and fraud.
During interrogation, he tried to deny it. He claimed he did not know the fake Lucas was his child. But Lucy’s statement and the DNA report made him speechless.
He had no choice but to confess in the end. He admitted he was blinded by money. He planned everything so his own son could become the heir of the Smith family.
Amy was also arrested for child abandonment and fraud.
During questioning, she broke down in tears. She said she was greedy for money. She forgot the twenty-three years bond she had with the Smith family and regretted it deeply.
Regrets meant nothing. What she did had brought serious harm to Lucas, and she had also ruined her whole life.
Susan’s mother, Ava, was arrested for instigation and attempted murder.
During interrogation, she still denied. She insisted she was only trying to protect her daughter and her grandson.
But with surveillance footage and Lucy’s testimony, it did not matter whether she confessed. The evidence was enough to convict her.
Ms. Thompson was arrested for obstruction of justice and intentional assault.
She confessed without hesitation. She admitted that Susan had paid her one million to do these things.
The confinement center was also shut down for serious management failures and criminal involvement. The responsible parties were held accountable as well.
After settling all the matters, I held a press conference for the company and released all the evidence.
I made it clear that the “Forcing My Wife to Donate Blood” headline was a setup by my wife and her family, and I cleared my name.
At the press conference, I presented the DNA report, the recordings involving Susan and the others, the surveillance footage, and the police filing notice.
After the conference, the three main partners who pulled out previously contacted me and wanted to collaborate again.
The stock price rebounded by 50 percent that same day, and the company website returned to normal.
Because Susan was an accomplice under coercion and showed remorse, she got a lighter sentence and received probation.
She came to find me, wanting to see me one last time.
We met at the law firm. She wore plain clothes. Her hair was cut short. She looked exhausted and much thinner.
“Eason, I know I’ve wronged you and Lucas.”
Susan teared up. “I had seen the divorce agreement. I can be left with nothing. I don’t want anything. I just hope I can see Lucas sometimes, even if it’s from afar.”
“You don’t deserve it.” I looked at her. “For someone who abandoned her son on the roadside and tried to freeze him to death, how can you be called a mother?
“For one that intentionally fed poisoned milk to kill her own son, what right does she have to see him?
“Sign the divorce paper and we will never see each other again.”
Susan signed, turned around, leaving slowly as though there was something she couldn’t let go of.
I would never forgive her for what she had done to Lucas.
Lucas finally could be discharged. A nurse was packing up his things.
Grandpa and Sam came to pick us up.
Grandpa held Lucas in his arms and grinned. He kept saying, “My great grandson. You’re finally coming home.”
Sam carried the bags behind us. He informed us the nursery room at home had already been set up, waiting for Lucas to move in.
