VANESSA
The Alpha said nothing. It was his usual method to ignore people when they knocked on his door.
He did it to me after I had come to the pack the first time and I was already used to it.
I knocked one more time, just to alert him of my presence in case he had anything private going on.
Just as expected, he did not say a word, so I placed my hand on the handle and opened the door gently to let myself into the chambers.
He was not in his bedroom, it had to be his study.
As I was walking in, I saw two maids leaving. They were adjusting their noises and buttons and my mind put the pieces of the puzzle together.
'They are definitely his concubines," I thought to myself, such a destructive, unproductive life to live.
The chambers did not look impressively clean. After he demoted me, I thought he would bring a replacement who was good at the job, probably better than me.
But everything still looked the same, untouched, uncleaned.
I was almost going to mutter on that subject when I heard his footsteps as he walked out of the study, approaching where I stood.
His face looked stern as usual and I was beginning to adapt to that fact.
'You finally realised I would never say 'come in" when you knock."
He had a smirk on his face and I shifted my gaze hastily to avoid that.
'You called for me Sir,"I mumbled, putting my hands behind me and fiddling with my fingers.
'There will be an event later today and I want you to serve with the contracted maids."
I felt my heart throbbing and I wondered why he would choose me for such an important role.
'If you have any questions about what is expected of you, meet Mrs Caul for clarifications."
'Yes sir!" I nodded and I started to leave, but he called me back.
'Wait! Make me a cup of coffee right now and get ready, you will be going out with me to my office."
I was dazed. What was he really playing at? Sacks me as his personal maid and now wants me to serve him coffee?
Who was I to complain?
I dashed to the coffee maker in his personal kitchen and made his coffee, designing it with the cream into a heart shape.
Before I lifted it, I looked at it and smiled subtly. It dawned on me that he probably was missing those designs and wanted to feel them again.
He did not say a word of thanks, so cold as steel. He simply sipped the coffee without even looking at me or pausing for a moment.
Whatever his reasons for being standoffish, I did not really care.
'Can I leave now sir?" I finally mustered the energy to ask after staring down at the floor for a while.
He waved at me in a demeaning manner to go ahead, so I turned and walked away, rolling my eyes detestfully at him.
'So full of himself," I thought in the silence of my heart.
On my way back to the maid's quarters, I was not looking straight ahead and I bumped into Michael, the newest guard in the pack.
I could tell by his Charming smile and his polite apology when I was at fault.
'I am so sorry," he apologised, his gentleness knocking me off balance.
'No..you don't have to apologise," I stuttered, struggling to tear my eyes away from his pretty eyes. 'It was my fault. I was not looking ahead."
'That's alright. I am Michael," he stretched out his hands for a shake but I gently brushed it away.
'I have got to run along now," I mumbled, trying to get away from his intoxicating charm. His smiles mirrored his inner beauty and I could not help but wonder who he really was.
I remembered hearing the girls talk about him a few days ago.
One specifically referred to him as a worthy alternative to Alpha Axel who appeared too cruel to ladies.
But, he was a distraction. I was not willing to indulge my thoughts in situations like that, so I shrugged off the thoughts of him and focused on the event that I was to appear in later in the day.
'I guess the Alpha has informed you about the role he intends for you to play today?" Mrs Caul mentioned as I appeared at the doorway. She was loud and the other girls all turned to face me.
It felt like my skin crawled as a result of their burning gaze that was directed to me.
'Yes ma'am," I quietly responded, picking up my work tools to go over to the toilets for my task.
'Drop those. You aren't handling the toilets today. Just go to the first floor, you should meet a team of new faces. Work with them for today."
I gently dropped the tools and walked out of the room, avoiding the piercing gazes of some of the other girls. I could feel their deep seethed jealousy for me as I walked past them.
'I didn't bring this upon myself," I thought as I took the walk out of the basement hall.
The whole castle hallways were busy and I could not help but wonder what this event was about.
As I walked past the large hall where the event was supposedly going to hold, I saw Michael, holding onto his weapon like his life depended on it. His body frame was stupendous and I could not take my eyes off him immediately.
Then, Emilia creeped in on him and tapped his shoulder lightly and Michael turned to her with a captivating smile. I had no idea that she had already found her way into his heart. The way he warmed up to her face and her appearance piqued my interest and I was glued to them, staring with no particular emotion.
I was so carried away that I did not notice a presence behind me.
'Is that how you intend to do the job assigned to you today?"
I turned sharply and my gaze locked with Axel's.
