Vanessa

'Hold on, I'll get the door." I offered immediately, walking to the door like a shadow of my own self because I couldn't believe what I had just heard.

I was literally on my own, trying my possible best not to be seen while somewhere in the pack they were planning to poison me. They didn't even know if the Alpha really favored me or if it was all just a ruse.

'Vanessa!" She called out in a voice that was way lower than a whisper.

'Yes." I halted at my steps and swiveled to meet her eye.

'Whoever it is, make sure the person doesn't see me, else they would know that I might have ratted them out." I nodded but thanks to whatever stars that she worshiped, because I was just about throwing my door wide open for whoever it was at the door.

"Good morning." I greeted as I slightly opened the door and I blinked twice when I saw that it was apparently one of the Alpha's concubines.

"Good morning, may I come in?" She asked with a face filled with forced smiles that even I could see through the glamour of her pretense.

"I would have loved you to come in, but then, my room is a little scattered and isn't in the right position to accept visitors. Maybe some other time." I forced a smile too, though cold chills ran down my spine when she offered to come in.

I would definitely find that suspicious even if the other concubine hadn't come to inform me of their vile plans.

"We've all been there, Vanessa. I could even help you out with arranging your room." She offered most graciously and I chuckled in reply.

"I appreciate your kind gesture," I started with a hand placed on my chest as a symbol of apology, "but I'd rather tidy up things in here on my own." She nodded, but I couldn't fail to see the glimmer of anger that had flashed through her eyes when she couldn't get to entering my room.

"Alright, thanks a lot. I'd better hurry." I winked, standing in the doorway till she had gotten out of the front of my room and was going away sulking in anger.

"That was a close call." I heaved a sigh as I walked back to her and sat on the bed.

"You have to be very careful, they think the Alpha favors you more than others."

"Why in the world would anyone think that? It's not like I'm the first concubine he will be picking on," I stressed, pushing my hair out of my face as I scrunched my face up in tiredness and anger.

"They even said it themselves that I am just a mere plaything." She abruptly placed a hand on my shoulder to stop me from talking because, apparently, if she didn't do that; I would go on and on yapping about it because it really hurts.

"Vanessa, just calm down. I just decided to let you know because I felt you should know, and also so you will be aware of your surroundings. I had better leave now before anyone realizes I've been gone for too long and suspects my movement." She stood up, and I followed suit, escorting her to the door while I walked ahead of her just to check if any of the concubines were in sight. I had a feeling that for one of them to want to walk into my room, then it was either they had begun suspecting her already or perhaps they had seen her walking into my room.

"No one is out now, you may just leave as quickly as you came." I informed her, and she nodded her head quickly before stepping out of the door.

"Be careful," she muttered, and I nodded.

"You too," I mouthed. Of course, she needed to be careful the instant she decided to join my side and warn me. If they found out, they would also begin plotting after her.

But what if her coming to warn me of their plans, so I would trust her, was also part of the scheme?

I didn't even know what to believe: if she was a friend or an enemy in disguise. But I had to choose the sharper end of the sword.

After all, there's a saying that to be informed is to be armed early.

My most crucial enemies were now the concubines.

A few hours later and there was still nothing to do other than lie in bed. I couldn't chit-chat with other concubines because they wanted me dead, and now I wish more than ever that I had just remained a normal maid.

This life was way lonelier than anyone can imagine, and I wondered how the other concubines didn't see it or act like they noticed it.

Perhaps they had grown accustomed to it, but there was just no way I could get used to this sickening feeling.

A knock came on my door and I bit the insides of my mouth almost immediately.

Here I was complaining that I was lonely, but also I was wincing just because of a knock.

"Who is it?" I dragged my feet to the door and when I opened it, I halted.

"You again?" I asked, but not in a sarcastic tone, I guess.

"Yes, me again. I wanted to invite you to a tea party." She giggled and I leaned onto the door frame.

"Invite me? I'm sorry, but have you all forgotten that we aren't that close?" I queried and she shook her head.

"It's not that. We also want to use the medium to apologize as to how hard we have been on you."

Yeah right?! A scenario to perpetrate their plans. That's what they wanted to create.

"Please be there, you're the main guest. The tea party is being held in your honor," she stated, and I nodded.

I can't wait to see the look of disgust on their faces when they still see me up and about tomorrow. This would be a ride.
