Chapter 107 He might not be able to walk again.
It was hard for him to breath. Even breathing requires a lot of energy which he was lacking. His mind was revolving around Celeste. 'I should have attended the call. I should have made sure to say a last good bye to her'. His subconsciousness was reminding him of Celeste even when he was not in the senses.
Observing, it is the end. He started to give up on life. The chances of survival were narrowing down with every passing second.
Finally, someone stopped his car to look at him. The door of the car was locked, and through the glass window, it was not visible, who is inside and in what state the person is, the other person could not make any decision. The man laid on the road to look at him through the windshield, because the car was flipped over. He could not see his face, due to the blood, completely covering him. But it was clear he is not in a good state and he also has no idea if he is even breathing. Still he tried to help him. The car was damaged badly and it was hard for a single man to drag him out of it. The passerby took out a fire extinguisher from his own car and started to hit the windshield with it.
Because the car was very luxurious, and had a very tight security system it was not an easy deal to break it. Even in the cold he was sweating and Edwin could hear someone's consistent shouting and hitting. "IF YOU ARE LISTENING TO ME, THEN PLEASE DON'T SLEEP". He was shouting on the top of lungs.
Edwin had already lost consciousness but because of that person he opened his eyes a little bit.
From the shouting and ruckus people started to gather. All of them took out equipment, whatever they had available to break the windshield and called the rescue team and ambulance.
It was best to get help from professionals. They waited for the rescue team to arrive as soon as possible and after waiting for some time they were at the spot to help him. His car was imported, but due to the severity of the incident even the air bags could not protect him. After using a lot of tools, they successfully unlocked the car, but the next step was even harder.
The steering wheel was piercing his abdomen but also stopping the bleeding. If they will remove the steering wheel it will result in a severe blood loss. That will lead to cardiac arrest and he already has difficulty breathing. There is a high probability that he will not make it before reaching the hospital. This type of injury is a penetrating injury. His legs were also entrapped. His breathing was slow. It was an impossible task to get him out of there without causing damage. But the main goal was to minimize it as much as possible. That's a rule of rescue.
With a lot of difficulty the rescue team straightened out the seat, separating the steering from him. In no time the blood gushed out like a fountain, lowering his pulse further. The tears were rolling down from his eyes due to the pain. He felt like the air was stuck in the throat. He could not exhale nor inhale it. His hand was dangling in the air.
No matter what they have to transfer him to the hospital as soon as possible. Because in the ambulance they cannot provide a treatment. It is only possible to provide him with first aid.
In rush they dragged him out of the car making sure that his spine is not damaged and put a pressure on his abdomen to reduce the bleeding and made their way to the hospital.
A member of a rescue team found his phone and wallet from the car to identify his identity and a way to contact his family. In the ambulance the emergency medical workers were trying their best to maintain his blood pressure and stop the bleeding. With the help of an ambu bag and pressure on the abdomen he was barely surviving. While his mind was revolving around Celeste.
Celeste opened her with a jerk and she was sweating profoundly. Her clothes were wet and she had no idea what had happened. She checked the phone and there was nothing. No call no message.
She checked the message and he hasn't seen it yet. Her heart thumped loudly against the rib cage.
She rubbed the belly in tension. "What is going on? Shall I go to his place? No, no that's not a good idea and at the time of the night.... never". She changed her mind. "He must be busy or maybe had an emergency flight. Otherwise he would never ignore me". She tried to make an excuse and reached on a conclusion. Still, the anxiety was surpassing all the levels.
Meanwhile, after having a battle between life and death he safely arrived at the hospital but his condition was getting worse and dropped down drastically. He was shifted to the ICU to get the treatment.
In the middle of night, Edwin's father woke up due to the continuous ringing of the phone. He waited for Edwin on the dinner but he did not come back so he ate alone because he had to take his medicines. Edwin mostly stays out of the house so he does not think much. According to him, he must be partying somewhere.
He received the call half awake and said in his sleepy voice, "Who's there?" He did not look at the called ID so asked.
"Are you the father of Mr. Edwin?" the person on the other side asked him.
The name Edwin coming out from the mouth of a stranger made him a little nervous. "Yes, speaking". He sat up immediately as he focused on the other party.
"We wanted to inform you that, Mr. Edwin had been in an accident. His condition is not looking good. He needs an emergency surgery. We want you to come here and sign a consent so the surgery can be initiated".
His father was shocked. His mind was hooked on only one sentence, 'His condition is not looking good'. How can he suddenly get into an accident? He felt his senses going numb. Edwin is his only treasure if something bad will happen to him, he will also not be able to live anymore. He ran outside bare footed, and asked the driver to take him to a respective hospital. The driver was also surprised by his condition. He looked like a madman. The driver asked the maid to bring him the shoes and drove him to the hospital.
Upon reaching the hospital, he saw Edwin laying on the bed lifeless. His body was covered with bandages making it even hard to recognize him. Several tubes and machines being attacked by his body and their beeping sound resonating in the cold air. The smell of disinfectant, these all factors were creating a scary ambiance.
He froze on the spot and saw a doctor checking up on his condition. "What's wrong with him?" he grabbed the doctor from the collar and asked like his life was dependent on it.
The doctor took a deep breath. Of course, it is the hardest part of being a doctor. But he took courage and started explaining calmly, "According to the reports and CT scans, the patient is suffering from several internal injuries. Furthermore, he also had a penetrating injury and that's the problem." He paused and Edwin's father felt his heart stopping. "Due to the penetrating injury, his organs have been damaged severely. He needs an urgent surgery so we can stop the internal bleeding and stitch up the torn organs."
Edwin's father was getting to know what it means to feel the sky falling and the earth snatched away under the feet. He thought that's the end but that wasn't. The doctor continued once again, "and it is going to be a hard surgery. His spine has already been damaged. Even if he survives the surgery, there is no guarantee if he will be able to stand on his feet".
What!!!
Edwin will really hate this. He does not want to look weak no matter what. But for a father, his survival is a top priority. About the rest he will think later.
Edwin's father suddenly thought of Zain. He is the best general surgeon in the country. He knows him and trusts him. He saw a hope. "Wait a minute. I have to make a call".
He dialed Zain's number hurriedly, and Zain received his call on the second bell. "Hello Uncle. Is everything okay? You are calling me this late?" Zain was worried.
"Nothing's fine. Edwin met with an accident. Can you come to the hospital? The doctors are saying he needs an urgent surgery."
"Ok. Don't worry I am coming." Zain ensured him.
His father went to see his unconscious body. "You have to wake up. Otherwise, your old father will also die". He held his hand in desperation, while tears were falling uncontrollably.
Zain came and saw all of his reports. The other doctors were right, the chances of his survival are very low. He looked helplessly at Edwin and his father. "Can you perform the surgery? Just make him wake up. As long as he is by my side I don't care about the rest".
He was being selfish here. What if Edwin doesn't like his crippled self. But Zain did not have the courage to say such a harsh thing. "Ok. I will try my best." He paused, "I have called Noah. He will be here and take care of other things. You should just pray for his recovery".
"Thank you". He tapped on his hand.
