Somewhere in an unknown hospital, in the morning, Edwin stood up on his feet, while gritting his teeth with the support of a doctor. The beads of sweat were shining on his forehead. His shirt was dripping wet with the sweat and representing the hard work he is putting in. He stood up but as soon as the doctor let go of him, he stumbled. His weak legs could not provide him enough support for his weight and he fell and a crushing pain from his lower body. But it was a good sign, his legs are starting to have sensations, which he could not feel before. He was soaking wet in sweat. "We can continue tomorrow." The doctor said dismissing the session and Edwin looked tired too.
"No, I will do it now. Please help me once again". Edwin held the hand of a doctor to stop him from leaving.
The doctor squatted down to console him, "Mr. Edwin, I know how you feel and I know too that it is frustrating to not be able to walk. Some things take time and I assure you your time and effort will be worth the results."
Instead of taking those words as a motivation, Edwin got furious. "What do you know? How can you sympathize with me when you are not in pain, when you don't really know what is really frustrating?" He was shouting at him, making the doctor sigh.
This isn't the first time he is behaving this way. Instead the frequency of his tantrums is growing each day. Maybe because he is aware that Celeste is going to give birth soon and he is still there. Standing on the starting line.
"Okay, you don't trust me. Let it be. The overworking will not help you. Mark my words." The doctor moved away from him, giving him space. Edwin looked at him in confusion. "Get up". The doctor stood at the side of the room and he was looking forward to seeing him.
Edwin had a strong will to get up, in result he was overexerting himself. There will be two extreme results in this case. Either he will start to walk now or he will give up.
Edwin gave him a deep glare. The doctor was not even helping him. He supported his body with his hands and put all the weight on them and tried to get up again. But fell hard on the hard and cold floor.
He clenched the teeth to bear the pain.
"You can shout. Don't hold back". The doctor gave him a piece of advice which he ignored.
After taking some deep breaths, Edwin once again dragged his lumpy legs and made a futile effort but the result was still the same. This time he fell harder and could not stop screaming. "AHHHH..... F**K". He cursed loudly but still did not give up.
Was it some monstrous strength? Or was his desperation surging high? He does not know.
The trainer passed him a bottle of water. His erratic breathing and racing heart will be the death of him. Edwin gulped it down in a hurry and in fury and frustration he threw that remaining water on the wall. He was really paying back for all the bad deeds he has done to her. His brown eyes welled up as he regretted every bad thing or sin he has done in life.
The emotions were not calming down today. When everyone thought he had given up... he started to make efforts again.
After 3-4 seconds he fell again. He continued to try but the outcome was the same every time. When he had no energy left he laid on the floor panting hard and covered his face with the elbow. He does not like anyone seeing his vulnerable state. That's why Celeste was also not allowed to see him.
The doctor really felt bad about his condition and situation. He is making progress but the speed is slow. That's why his mood swings were getting harshern.
The doctor sat beside him and patted his shoulder, "You are already doing great. Don't strain out yourself. Okay? Just believe in yourself and I am sure you will make it. We all are rooting for you". The doctor was aware of everything about him whether it is personal or medical record. In order to lift up the mood, he thought of teasing him, "Are you thinking of your girlfriend? You haven't shown her to me yet. I never thought that you can be such a possessive freak". He was grinning ear to ear.
"F**k off". Edwin growled.
"Okay, okay. I will f**k off. But before you have to answer me a question". The doctor was not going to let him go easily.
"Speak". Edwin said, giving him a death glare and let the doctor see his face by putting away the hand.
"Do you love her?"
That was totally unexpected. He thought that the doctor would talk about some medical issues. This was the first time in 8 months that he talked about his personal life.
Edwin was caught in deep thoughts and his eyes roamed on the blank ceiling. "I love her. I love her more than I think. I thought before coming here that I will stop missing her after sometime but I was totally wrong. The urge to see her, to touch her is always rising with every second and now it is getting out of my control and my tolerance is wavering." Edwin opened up.
"You will get better soon. You are doing good. By the way what will you do after getting better?" He was curious to know.
"I will purpose her". For the first time in 8 months he saw him smiling.
"Will you invite me to your wedding? I want to see who has taken away your heart". The doctor said while chuckling.
But a film of memories started to play in his mind. He was the one who chased after her and she rejected him countless times.
"Sure. If she will accept me. I will definitely invite you". He nodded at the doctor without looking at his face, while the salty droplets fell from the corner of his eyes, whether the reason behind them was the hard training or missing someone..... he could not comprehend that.
The doctor left him alone and gave him some personal space.
Today, he was not getting good vibes, like his senses were alerting him that something is going to happen. It's already been 8 months since the accident. He talked to Carissa a day before and she told him that Celeste has stopped working and she is not well these days. He begged Carissa to look after Celeste. Carissa asked her to live with her but as usual she denied her offer without any hesitation. The time for her to give birth was also coming closer. He wanted to talk to her but controlled his urge. If he will talk to her now, it will get hard for him later. He glanced at the trainer and helper and they helped him to sit on the wheelchair.
Celeste worked like usual during the days of her pregnancy. But the only change was... she wasn't alone. If destiny had snatched Edwin from her then the fate wasn't so ruthless with her. It started to give birth to another soul within her body and even if she is not completely happy then at least she is not completely dissatisfied or unhappy with her life too.
The little soul motivate her to get up and....
live on,
to move on
And to wait for him.
A part inside her always yearns for him and there is a belief that is growing stronger day by day that he will be back.
Edwin is aware of the fact that he is going to be a father and now there isn't one person who is waiting for him but two. The motivation to get back on his feet has multiplied by 2.
In the blink of an eye, she was in the trimester of the pregnancy and it was hard to work now. The protruding belly and severe aches..... they were all hindering her usual life.
The night was getting deeper and darker. Suddenly, she woke up due to the pain. She was breaking in a cold sweat and a stabbing pain was rising from her lower abdomen. She knew the time had come.
So, instead of panicking she decided to remain firm and tough. No one was beside her. Even though Carissa begged her to stay with her but she did not agree. If Edwin is not by her side then she does not need anyone else. Celeste ignored the pain, and called a cab, it was night and due to less traffic the car immediately came. From her face, everything looked fine, beside the cold sweat beads. She endured the contracting sensations and went to the hospital on her own.
The doctor was surprised to see her all alone in this state. "Do you want to die?" the doctor growled at her when she looked at her in this state.
"You can shout at me later. Please do something about the pain first". She said with difficulty, clenching her teeth and fists.
The doctors immediately took some tests and prepared for a delivery.
It took her a great effort to stay strong.
After a while, the crying of the baby can be heard. She had no energy left. "Congratulations its a baby girl". The doctor said, placing a baby in her embrace. The warmth that the small body radiating was familiar to her, like she had found a treasure.
She looked at the small face, which did not look like anyone, nor Celeste or Edwin, still radiating a familiar vibe. The little angel held her finger tightly, as an indication, that she is probably protecting herself from this cruel world in the embrace of her mother.
