The hall of the city conference center was filled to capacity, with an atmosphere of anticipation and tension. On stage, two chairs faced each other, with a famous TV host between them. The big screen flickered with tonight's debate topic: "Neural Bridge: The Future of Human Connection or the End of Privacy?"

Alex stood backstage, making final preparations. She wore her signature navy blue suit with her hair neatly coiled at the back of her head, looking confident and professional. But deep inside, she felt a hint of unease. Tonight she would face Chloe Ward, Marcus's ex-girlfriend and the most powerful critic of the Neural Bridge.

"Five minutes until you're on, Dr. Chen," a staff member informed her.

Alex nodded and took a deep breath. She had prepared for weeks, anticipated every possible question, and prepared every possible rebuttal. She knew her position was right—the Neural Bridge was changing countless lives, creating unprecedented understanding and connection.

But she couldn't shake the feeling that tonight's debate was not just about technology and ethics, but also about her marriage, about Marcus's heart.

On the other side backstage, Chloe Ward was also making her final preparations. Alex had never formally met her, only seen her in videos and photos. But tonight, she would face this woman, the woman who had once been so close to Marcus, the woman who now threatened both her career and her marriage.

"Ready?" the host walked up to Alex and asked friendlily.

"Of course," Alex answered, forcing herself to smile.

The music started, the lights came on, and the host walked onto the stage, enthusiastically introducing tonight's debate and the two guests. Alex took a deep breath, walked onto the stage, while from the other side, Chloe Ward also emerged.

Chloe was more elegant and composed than Alex had imagined. She wore a simple gray suit, her black hair falling naturally on her shoulders, her manner calm and confident. When the two shook hands at the center of the stage, Alex felt a strange shock—this woman had once been an important part of Marcus's life, and now they stood on opposite sides of thought.

"I'm glad to finally meet you, Dr. Chen," Chloe said, her voice gentle but firm.

"Likewise, Dr. Ward," Alex responded, trying to maintain a professional demeanor.

The two took their respective seats as the moderator began explaining the debate rules. Alex scanned the audience and spotted Marcus in the center of the third row. His expression was serious, his gaze shifting between her and Chloe. Through the Neural Bridge, Alex could sense his tension and unease, despite the low connection strength.

"Let's begin," said the host, "Dr. Chen, as the creator of the Neural Bridge, please briefly introduce the purpose and vision of this technology."

Alex sat up straight, her voice clear and confident. "The core goal of the Neural Bridge is to create true understanding. One of humanity's greatest sufferings is the inability to make others truly understand our feelings and thoughts. Language is limited, expressions can be misunderstood. The Neural Bridge crosses these barriers, allowing people to directly share sensory experiences, emotions, and even memories."

She paused, looking around. "Imagine a world where parents can truly understand their teenage children's struggles; where partners can feel each other's joy and pain; where doctors can accurately perceive patients' symptoms. This is not just a technological advancement, it's a revolution in human connection."

The host nodded and turned to Chloe. "Dr. Ward, as a neuroethicist, what concerns do you have about the Neural Bridge?"

Chloe elegantly crossed her legs, her voice calm yet powerful. "Dr. Chen paints a beautiful picture, but ignores a fundamental fact: the human brain has evolved over millions of years, forming complex protective mechanisms, including the privacy of thoughts. These mechanisms aren't flaws, but features."

She leaned forward, her gaze sharp. "Privacy isn't just a right, it's a psychological necessity. We need safe inner spaces to process complex emotions, form independent thoughts, and even make mistakes and grow. The Neural Bridge threatens this fundamental need."

Alex immediately countered: "The Neural Bridge isn't mandatory, it's a choice. Users can control the depth and duration of the connection. This isn't about eliminating privacy, but about choosing when, how, and with whom we share our inner worlds."

Chloe shook her head. "Choices are based on information, but we know very little about the long-term effects of the Neural Bridge. There have already been reports of cases showing memory confusion, emotional leakage, and blurred identity boundaries. We are conducting a large-scale, insufficiently tested social experiment."

The debate continued, with the two engaging in intense exchanges on technological safety, ethical boundaries, and social impact. Alex cited data and user testimonials, while Chloe referenced neuroscience research and philosophical principles. The audience sometimes applauded, sometimes whispered, captivated by this collision of ideas.

"Let's talk about a specific issue," the host proposed midway through the debate, "the impact of the Neural Bridge on intimate relationships. Dr. Chen, you and your husband were the first test subjects, how has this affected your marriage?"

Alex felt a wave of nervousness but maintained a professional smile. "The Neural Bridge allows us to understand each other in entirely new ways. My husband is an architect, and through the Neural Bridge, I can experience his unique perception of space and form. Similarly, he can experience my passion for neuroscience. This creates an unprecedented level of intimacy and understanding."

She carefully chose her words, not wanting to lie but also not wanting to expose the tension between her and Marcus.

Chloe's gaze sharpened. "But intimate relationships aren't just about understanding; they're about accepting the fact that we cannot fully understand each other. True love isn't about demanding complete transparency, but respecting the other person's independence and sense of mystery."

Alex felt a sting, as these words touched upon her deepest doubts. "Mystery might be romantic, but it can also lead to misunderstanding and estrangement. How many relationships have broken down because of 'you don't understand me'? The Neural Bridge offers a way to bridge that gap."

"Or create new chasms," Chloe countered, "What happens when one side wants complete transparency while the other needs to maintain some personal space? What happens when technology is used for surveillance rather than connection?"

Alex felt uncomfortable because Chloe's words seemed to directly target her recent thoughts—modifying the Neural Bridge to bypass Marcus's restrictions. She unconsciously glanced toward Marcus in the audience and found him watching the stage nervously, his expression complicated.

Through the Neural Bridge, Alex felt a strong wave of emotions—Marcus's feelings as he watched Chloe. This wasn't just nostalgia for an ex-girlfriend, but something deeper, an emotion that Alex couldn't fully interpret but that made her heart ache.

"Last question," the host said, "What do each of you think the Neural Bridge represents for humanity's future?"

Chloe answered first: "The Neural Bridge represents a dangerous turning point—we risk losing what constitutes the core of human experience: the ability to think independently, the right to keep secrets in our minds, and the possibility of being loved even when not fully understood."

Alex took a deep breath, struggling to concentrate despite Marcus's emotions still coming through the Neural Bridge. "The Neural Bridge represents a new era of human connection, one where we're no longer bound by the limitations of language and expression. Yes, it requires new boundaries and rules, but the potential is limitless—true understanding, true empathy, true connection."

The debate ended with enthusiastic applause from the audience. Alex and Chloe shook hands again, maintaining professional courtesy on the surface, but both knew this debate was about far more than technology and ethics.

After leaving the stage, Alex immediately looked for Marcus. She found him in the backstage corridor, but to her surprise, Chloe was already there, and the two were talking with serious expressions.

When Alex approached, the two suddenly stopped talking. Marcus looked both nervous and guilty, while Chloe maintained a calm, professional demeanor.

"Brilliant debate, Dr. Chen," Chloe said, with sincerity in her voice, "Although we stand on different positions, I respect your passion and conviction."

"Thank you," Alex responded, trying to remain polite, "Your perspectives were insightful too, though I disagree with most of them."

After an awkward silence, Chloe checked her watch. "I should go, I have another interview." She turned to Marcus, "Think about what I said, will you?"

Marcus nodded, his expression serious. After Chloe left, Alex turned to Marcus, her eyes full of questioning.

"What were you talking about?" she asked directly.

Marcus avoided her gaze. "Just some ideas about the debate. She raised some points worth considering."

Alex felt a stinging pang of jealousy and suspicion. "Really? It looked more personal than that."

"Alex, it's not what you think," Marcus said wearily, "We were just discussing the ethical issues of the Neural Bridge."

Alex wanted to believe him, but the mixed emotions coming through the Neural Bridge made it impossible for her to be certain. Marcus's feelings upon seeing Chloe were so complex, so intense that they broke through the limitations of the low-level connection.

"Let's go home," she finally said, with weariness in her voice, "Tonight has been too long."

As they walked toward the parking lot, Alex noticed that Chloe was talking to a reporter not far away. She saw Marcus's gaze being drawn there involuntarily, with a flash of emotion in his eyes that Alex couldn't decipher.

In that moment, Alex made a decision. If Marcus was unwilling to voluntarily share his true thoughts and feelings, then she would have to take other measures. As the creator of the Neural Bridge, she had the ability to modify her own controller and bypass the restrictions Marcus had set.

It was a betrayal of trust, she knew. But in her view, Marcus had already betrayed her first—by blocking their connection, by concealing his true relationship with Chloe.

On the way home, silence filled the car. Alex looked at the city lights flashing past the window, contemplating the action she was about to take. She had created the Neural Bridge to end human loneliness, but at this moment, she had never felt so alone.
