My daughter was critically injured in a fall, her life hanging by a thread.
My husband,a pediatrician, chose to save his childhood sweetheart's daughter instead.
Our daughter died because she didn't receive timely treatment.
I called my husband to come see her body, but he snapped,"Emma's condition is unstable. Can you stop making a fuss all day?"
Devastated,I was hit by a car and died.
...
I rushed into the hospital with my injured daughter in my arms, searching for my husband,Daniel Harris,a pediatrician.
My daughter,sobbing,reached out to him.
"Daddy,I fell.My head hurts so much..."
Daniel glanced at her,frowning.
"The hospital isn't a playground for you.Go home."
With that,he walked over to a woman and took a little girl from her arms.
It was Claire Thompson and her daughter,Emma.
Claire was Daniel's childhood sweetheart.
Claire said anxiously,"Daniel, look at Emma. She can barely breathe now."
Daniel immediately reassured her.
"Claire,don't worry.As long as I'm here,Emma will be fine."
I bit my lower lip and called out to him,"Daniel,Lily hit the back of her head. You—"
"Rachel,enough!It's just a minor injury,she’s fine.Stop being so dramatic.You've spoiled her!"
Daniel turned,visibly annoyed,cutting me off.
Then he carried Claire's daughter inside.
I stared at his retreating figure, stunned.
It was always like this.Whenever Claire and her daughter needed him,Daniel rushed to them.
But when Lily and I needed him,he found us a nuisance.
I started to follow him,but Lily's pained voice stopped me.
"Mommy...why did Daddy say that?My head really hurts..."
"Mommy,I feel sick..."
I looked down at Lily, every word from her seemed to stab at my heart.
"Mommy's taking you to a doctor right now. It'll stop hurting soon,I promise."
Despite Daniel saying Lily was fine,a gnawing unease gripped me.
Lily's voice grew weaker.
"Mommy,I'm sorry.If I hadn't run out to find Daddy,I wouldn't have fallen..."
I could do nothing but to kiss her face over and over again.
"Lily,it's not your fault. You'll be okay. You'll be fine."
I ran with her to the emergency room, pleading,"Doctor, please save my daughter. She fell."
The doctor examined her,his expression grave, and quickly wheeled her into the ER.
I stood outside, heart pounding with dread.
After what felt like an eternity, the ER doors opened. The doctor removed his mask, sighing,"IWe’ve done anything we can."
I froze,my mind went blank,shaking my head."No,that's impossible.You're mistaken.She just fell."
Daniel had looked at Lily.If something was wrong, how could he not have noticed?
The doctor said,"She hit the back of her head, causing massive intracranial bleeding. That's what led to her death."
He paused, adding,"When you brought her in,I noticed her complexion. It was clear something was seriously wrong..."
In an instant my face went pale,as if I'd fallen into an abyss.
I dragged my heavy legs into the ER.
Seeing Lily's pale face,I felt suffocated by grief.
My Lily!
My daughter!
And I could never see her again, forever!
My trembling hands cradled her cold body,I went into a breakdown.
"Lily, wake up and look at Mommy, please?"
"Lily,I'm begging you,wake up,okay?"
No matter how I cried,I couldn’t brought her back.
Why didn't Daniel notice something was wrong when I first brought her to him?Because his focus was entirely on Claire and her daughter!
I hated him so much!
I fainted from crying.
When I woke,I was in a hospital bed, overwhelmed by sorrow.
I got up and went to find Daniel.
Learning he was in Emma's room,I headed there.
At the door, his voice stopped me in my tracks.
