I ran two red lights, and burst into the ER while holding Lucas in my arms.
“Doctor! Please save my baby!”
The nurses and doctors immediately came to help. The red light outside the operating room came on. I took a deep breath in, forcing myself to calm down.
The most important thing right now was to save Lucas. After that, I would look for evidence to prove Susan and her family had been lying all along.
The strongest evidence would be a paternity test!
I took several strands of Lucas's hair off my shirt, then turned around to go to the hospital’s DNA testing center.
When I reached the stairs, a familiar figure suddenly stepped in my way.
“Eason, where do you think you’re going?” Amy stood there, looking at me scarily. Two bodyguards from the confinement center followed her behind.
Amy spoke coldly, “Susan is bleeding heavily at the center after giving birth. She’s in danger so you must come with me!”
I came to my senses. This must be one of their tricks! I stepped back.
Amy looked at me sharply and saw the hair in my hand. “What are you holding in your hand? Are you up to something? Please hurry up and come back with me!”
I shouted, “Amy, you have watched over me growing up. Why are you helping them instead?
Amy looked away for a bit and said sternly, “If you don’t come with me, don’t blame me for getting rough!”
Once she finished talking, she signaled the bodyguards behind her. Two of them immediately came forth and grabbed me by my arms.
I fought back but their strength outweighed me. I could not budge at all.
I was forcefully taken back to the confinement center.
When I pushed open the VIP suite door, I saw Susan lying on the bed, with tears in her eyes.
Ms. Thompson and several nurses by her bedside looked worried.
Seeing that I was being pushed in, the manager blamed me. “Mr. Smith, you’re finally back. What you did at the hospital today was unacceptable! Susan has just given birth, so her body is weak. After you provoked her, she suddenly experienced massive bleeding. They almost had to remove her uterus…”
I looked at Susan sarcastically. “If it were that serious, how can you still be here at the center? There’s nothing here that can save you.”
I walked toward the cradle and looked at the unfamiliar baby’s face. “That's not my son!” I switched on my phone, and opened my photo album. I looked for Lucas’s video and photo when he was born so I could compare them to this baby.
I noticed everything was gone! But a few hours ago, I still showed them to the police!
I panicked.
Suddenly, my phone rang. It was a call from the hospital. I answered, “Doctor, how is my son doing?”
The doctor replied, “Mr. Smith, your son has a serious infection and breathing difficulty. He needs a blood infusion now. But his blood type is RH negative, and we don’t have enough blood in our blood bank. Are you or your wife RH-negative? We hope you can come to the hospital and donate right away.”
RH negative! That was not my blood type, but Susan's!
I looked at Susan and begged her. “Lucas needs a blood infusion. Please go to the hospital and save him!”
She stared at me mockingly. “That baby has nothing to do with me. Why must I save him?”
I grabbed hold of her hand and asked her, “He’s the child you’ve been carrying for nine months. You suffered so much when you were pregnant with him. How can you be so heartless now?”
Susan jerked her hand out of mine and let out a cold laugh.
“My son is doing just fine in his cradle. The one in the hospital isn't mine!”
