When I rushed to the hospital, the doctor came out of the room. “Mr. Smith, your son is temporarily out of danger, but he still needs to stay in the ICU for two days as the infection is still not yet under control.”
I felt relieved. I followed the nurse to the ICU. Looking through the glass window, I saw Lucas sleeping in the small incubator. He looked much better than before.
I pulled out my phone and called my assistant. “Please help me to run a background check on someone. Her name is Lucy Shuman, Amy’s daughter. She lives in Riverside Estate, Building 3, Unit 2. Please find out whether she gave birth at Westside Hospital three months ago, and who the father is, as fast as you can.”

After hanging up, I stood by the window for over two hours.
After Lucas’s heart rate stabilized, I only found a chair to sit on.
Not long after, my assistant called.
He sounded urgent. “Mr. Smith, I’ve found her! Lucy Shuman gave birth to a boy three months ago at Westside Hospital. Since she wasn’t married, the father’s info was left empty.
“I pulled up the security footage near the hospital, and found that John showed up for Lucy’s prenatal visits and her delivery. He even helped her get discharged. In addition, Lucy’s baby was born on the exact same day as Lucas.”
My heart sank as I found this had to do with John.

I was about to tell my assistant to contact Lucy when I heard loud footsteps and shouting coming from the end of the hall.
Susan’s mom, Ava, shouted, “You can’t stop me! My son-in-law is here. I’m going to find him!”
I stood up, and saw her bringing three relatives rushing over.
When she saw me, she jumped on me, wanting to hit me hard.

“Eason, you scumbag! Look what you’ve done to my daughter! I’m going to make you pay today!”
I dodged. The bodyguards immediately went up to stop them.
Ava yelled, “Don’t think you can mistreat us just because we’re from the countryside. The baby at the confinement center is the real Lucas! The one in the hospital is an abandoned baby!”
As she kept talking, she suddenly pulled out a pair of scissors from an old sack bag, and rushed to the ICU. “I will kill Lucas today!”
The bodyguard reacted instantly. He yanked the scissors away and pinned Ava against the wall.
I stared at her coldly. “You think you can hurt Lucas with just a pair of scissors? The surveillance camera outside the ICU captures everything. This is attempted murder.”
Ava froze. Then she started throwing another tantrum. “If you dare to call the police, I’ll lie down right here and cry. I’ll make sure everyone knows you’re mistreating an old woman.”
At the same time, my assistant messaged me. “Mr. Smith, I found Lucy. I’ve brought her here. She’s downstairs at the hospital entrance.”
I told the bodyguards to keep an eye on Ava and went downstairs.
Lucy looked like she was in her early twenties. She wore a worn-out jacket, looking guilty.
The moment she saw me, she stepped back.
“You…Why are you looking for me? I don’t know you.”
I got straight to the point. “Three months ago, you gave birth to a son. He’s now at the confinement center posing as my son, Lucas. Are John and your mother, Amy, the ones forcing you to do this?”
Lucy turned pale. She bit her lips and stayed silent.
I pulled out a photo. It showed Jason accompanying her for a prenatal visit at the hospital. I also presented her, her son’s birth certificate.
“This is evidence. You can stay silent, but the police will soon bring you in for questioning.”
Lucy teared up. “My mom forced me. She said I have to give my baby to Susan. If my son were the heir to the Smith family, we could get a lot of money.
“I didn’t want to do it. She said she’d disown me if I refused to listen to her…”
I gritted my teeth in fury.
It was a plot they had planned all this time.
“Come with me, and tell the police everything,” I said.
Lucy nodded and followed me upstairs.
When we reached the ICU, my assistant was already there with the police.
Ava was surprised to see Lucy. “Why are you here? Who told you to come over?!”
Lucy hid behind me and whispered, “Mom, I’m sorry. I cannot lie anymore. This is a crime.”
